NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Review

nyx pencil 4NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils have been around for a while now and have quickly become a staple in the kits of many makeup artists, but are these multi-use pencils worth all the hype?

What it claims to do:

According to the NYX Cosmetics website this product is a radiant eye liner that also doubles as an eye shadow. Made with a blend of mineral oil and powder, our creamy Jumbo Eye Pencils glide on effortlessly—no pulling, tugging or fading—and come in a rainbow of vivid hues. Some call her chubby. We say voluptuous. Available in 28 shades.

What it actually does:

This is a pretty good product in general but the coolest thing, in my opinion, about these eye pencils is the range of shades.  You’ve got everything from your basic black (Black Bean) to neon green (Cucumber) and everything in between.  Some are on the matte side while others are full of shimmer and glitter.  The colors are super fun and will leave you wanting to collect them all.

For the purpose of this review I am going to focus on what are probably the two most popular shades, Black Bean and Milk.  As their names imply these are black and white pencils.  The formula, just as the website claims, is super creamy.  They are very easy to apply and they do not tug on your skin.  If you use these as an eye shadow base you will find the creamy formula extremely easy to blend, giving you a quick and simple smokey eye.  The chunky pencil can be sharpened if you are very careful and you can even depot the product if you prefer it in a jar, just search YouTube for instructional videos.
nyx pencil 3When using the NYX Jumbo Eye pencils as an eyeliner I prefer to use them in my lower waterline.  I find that the large size of the pencil doesn’t give you precise control for lining the upper lash line, unless you are smudging the line out.  Milk is great for the lower water line and the inner corners of your eyes.  It will make your eyes look larger and more bright and awake.  Because the pigmentation on these pencils is superb you’ll want to build the color gradually, this is especially true when using Milk in the lower waterline since you don’t want the white to look too harsh.  These pencils haven’t irritated my eyes or contacts in any way.  Milk is also handy as an eye shadow base because it will help bring out the colors in your shadows.
I mainly use Black Bean when creating dark dramatic looks as an eye shadow base.  I actually rarely use it as a liner.  As I previously mentioned this is a great way to create smokey eyes since it makes it pretty simply to define your Outer V area.  If I am going for something super dark I’ll put a little of this product over my entire lid the blend out and layer with my dark shadows.

Which bring me to my next point.  Because these products are super creamy they must be set with shadows.  If you wear these alone they are going to smudge and even worse they will crease.  The creasing is the only aspect about this product that I dislike.  I have even found that if I wear these for an extended period with eye shadows on top they will still crease on me.  To solve this problem I have to use my Urban Decay Primer Potion under the NYX Jumbo Pencils to decrease the crease!  Also be aware that this product is not the longest lasting in the waterline so you will need to set that area with shadows as well and you may also have to retouch during the day.

Worth it?

I think these products are a fun, must have addition to any makeup kit.  They retail for $4.50 so they are super affordable and you’ll frequently find them on a buy one get one half off deal at Ulta.  I recommend picking up both Black Bean and Milk then choosing a few of the fun colors to play around with.  They really are a 2 for 1 product and you’ll get a lot of use out of them.  I do recommend them more as an eye shadow base than as a liner and remember to be aware of their tendency to crease.
